 Beware of Battery Issues-Works Hard but Not Very Long September 2, 2010

I had great expectations for this expensive trimmer/edger. I paid a premium price in hopes of avoiding problems concerning quality. If you read the product review you'll see Greenworks is extremely proud of their lithium-ion battery. Its the heart of their cordless yard tools. For 2 weeks it worked like a champ. Plenty of power and great performance. Less than 6 weeks after purchase it's sitting in a warranty repair facility waiting for them to determine if my battery or charger is faulty. The battery will no longer charge beyond 25% capacity.
The repair facility tells me it may be 2 weeks before somebody can look at it. If it's the battery, I'll need to send it to another location for replacement. Bottom line: I bought a trimmer to work, not sit in a repair facility. My advice: don't buy power tools like this on line. Go to a dealer where you can return it for refund or repair.

Based upon my own experience as well as that of several other reviewers of this product on Amazon, there appears to be a serious flaw with the start switch of the Greenworks 21602 trimmer. As a result, the one I purchased just three months ago will no longer start when the start switch is pressed, despite the battery being fully charged. And Greenworks customer service is a joke. I was told by their clueless rep that my only recourse under the warranty was to take the defective trimmer to the nearest authorized service dealer, which happens to be 75 MILES from my home. Given the long distance I would need to travel to have it fixed and the fact that the trimmer is practically brand new, I e-mailed Greenworks over a week ago asking that they consider replacing it, or at the very least, allowing me to return it to them for repair. So far no word from them in response to this request, which is another example of their poor customer service. So don't be fooled by the product's four year warranty. What good is it if authorized repair shops are few and far between?

Do not buy this trimmer. Broke on the third use (trigger switch malfunction). Cannot find a local shop to repair "greenworks" products. Sunrise sent me to a non-warranty shop for repair (a real waste of time). Sunrise customer service is terrible. Now I'm left with a non-funtioning wall ornament. Don't buy this unless you want the same.

When you buy this make sure that you understand what you're buying. This is not the trimmer you want if you are going to be cutting tall thick weeds. If you are cutting shorter thinner grass, this thing is perfect. The build quality is rather high, and the low weight is great. I can run it for almost an hour on one charge. Would highly recommend this product, just be sure it fits your needs.

I have owned two other NiCd battery trimmers before, and was tired of the short battery life. I will never buy a NiCd battery operated tool again. We have a one acre piece of property with a long driveway and many flower beds.I can edge the long driveway and walkway and trim around everything and still have power to go. Aside from just running longer it is also stronger. I will reinforce what another reviewer said and that is about the edging--we had let our driveway go unedged for a few years so there was about four inches of "sod" over the edge. I did try to edge it with the Greenworks and wasn't successful. We then fired up an old gas powered edger and did the edging with that but I have maintained that crisp edge very easily with the Greenworks. I couldn't be happier with the product. I recently also purchased the Greenworks leaf blower that I also love. While it isn't as strong as the corded one we have it gets the job done of blowing off the grass clippings and leaves off the patio and driveway. I can trim, edge, and use the blower (same battery) and have power to spare. I was a little anxious about spending the inital $180 but I feel it is one of the best purchases I have made as long as the manufacter's claim that the battery has 2000 charges in it is accurate.
