 Review of B & D spring loaded battery for 18-volt power tools September 1, 2010

This is an excellent battery which delivers as promised and provides approximately 60 minutes of power for a pole hedge clipper. Power diminishes slowly as the battery is used, and recharging seems to take about 4-5 hours. Battery power has been sufficient in trimming even somewhat thick branches and stems.

Black & Decker seem to have made a bad decision when they chose to use Ni-CD (Nickle-Cadmium) batteries in their line of cordless tools. For years, everyone has known that NI-CD batteries suffer from battery "memory." Unless they are run down completely each time, they will "remember" how much charge they need to reach a full charge and soon will only take that partial charge.
I tried to eliminate this problem on my B&D tools (cordless drill, string trimmer/edger, and dustbuster) by building a battery discharger using a car light bulb and a couple of clip leads. This helped, but after a few months of use, they stopped holding a full charge.
I began looking for information on the batteries to see if there was something I could do, or if I could find a better replacement battery. I stumbled across a battery on eBay that was listed as a replacement for the HPB18 and I found a seller who was selling 3.0Ah Ni-Mh (Nickle Metal Hydride) batteries to fit these tools. Ni-Mh batteries do not develop a "memory" so they can be charged without being run down. They will charge up to a full charge every time (well, they will get old eventually.) They are a bit more expensive than the B&D batteries, but I ordered one to try. I was not disappointed!
Using my B&D Ni-Cd batteries to trim and edge my lawn required 4 charged battery packs. With the new Ni-Mh batteries, I could do the whole lawn with 1 pack.
The same results happened with my dustbuster. The B&D batteries had to be charged after 2-3 days of brief, intermittent use. The Ni-Mh batteries last well over 1 week!
A few words of caution if you switch to the Ni-Mh batteries: They will charge using the standard, black, slip-on battery chargers sold by B&D, but the charging time will be longer (they are storing more charge.) I would not recommend using the Dual Charger since it is a quick charger and may not be compatible with Ni-Mh batteries (being a bit expensive, I haven't wanted to sacrifice one of my Ni-Mh batteries to test!) Finally, make sure you buy the 3Ah batteries - the same seller is selling lower capacity batteries if you don't need the higher power, but you will probably regret not spending the extra money for higher power batteries eventually.
I now have 4 of the Ni-Mh batteries and they are all working great.

Although I love my black and decker yard tools, the batteries only seem to last about a year and a half. Pretty soon I will have spent more on the batteries than the tools themselves. I love the tools, so I'll keep doing it, but it's kind of like printers and print cartridges... more money on the cartridges than the printer... I keep a set of three batteries charging so I can always have one ready to go for weed-wacking, blowing, trimming, etc... but, even after 1 and 1/2 years, they would only last about 2 minutes before dying. So, you just have to buy more batteries to get you through another year and a half.

I've used my HedgeHog trimmer maybe a dozen times in three years. I just got the battery out this June to put into the HedgeHog and it was dead. Okay fine, I'll charge it.
Put it on the charger and no lights; Hmmm. So I left it on the charger, hoping maybe the lights just didn't work. A few hours later, still nothing. This battery was used a few times and now is shot. Maybe I didn't use it ENOUGH??? Regardless, a $35 battery (HALF the price of the tool it is supposed to power) ought to last more than a few times over a few years.
So... Do I dump it and get another brand with a new battery and charger included or get a new battery and hope the trimmer lasts for a while?
Altogether, very disappointing.
